TAGteach (Teaching with Acoustical Guidance) is a training methodology for implementing operant principles. Although the TAGteach methodology was derived from clicker training, TAGteach provides additional procedures along with the audible stimulus to promote skill acquisition. This methodology is being taught to increase skill performance across many domains (e.g. sports, parent training, academics, communication, vocational training, life skills, etc.).

| 07/12/10 | 15 | Tennis | The Kidlet is learning to play tennis.
We will arrive at her lesson 15 minutes early everyday this week to work on her serve. | We worked through the stance, the toss and started the swing in 15 minutes of tagging.
Tag points were: Tag point: Toes to Post Tag point: Racket on Back Tag point: Toss up and forward This tag point did not give enough information. I made it into three tags. Tag point: Begin toss at shoulder Tag point: Extend fingers with toss. Tag point: Eyes and hand follows ball I chalked a box on the court for her to let her toss bounce into. After using her racket to gage the correct high, she did about ten or 12 tosses and just let the ball drop on the court in to the box. Tag point: Little Lean Tag point: Reach high The Kidlet suggested that we rename the reach high tag to statue of liberty, a tag we use for fast pitch soft ball. | I need to break the serve into small bites and tag the Kidlet on each part.
Tennis is not my sport. I used Tennis Steps to Success, 3rd edition by Jim Brown to build my model for tagging a serve. The serve is the most important shot in Tennis. You cannot "win" a point if you did not serve. The objectives for the beginner learning the serve are to work on technique, strength and consistency. I picked the punch-serve to start because it looked like the serve that the instructor was trying to teach and it is the easiest to learn. The objectives for a good serve are: 1. to get the serve into play consistently while using proper technique 2. when consistent getting the ball in to play, the goal is to be able to hit the ball exactly where you want it to go 3. to hit harder 4. to hit with a variety of spins 5. to have a pre-serve routine My objective for the Kidlet is for her to get the ball in to play %75 percent of the time while using proper technique. Directions will follow. |
| 07/12/10 |
| Tennis/ continued |
|
| The directions are:
Part 1. Stand behind service line at about a 45% angle to the net, facing one of the net post. She is right handed so she will position her left foot forward at the 45% angle. (She will move back to the baseline once she can hit from the service line) Repeat the step on the left and right side of the service line. Work a tag point here for the foot position. Part 2. To toss the ball, hold the ball at the base of the fingers of left hand. Extend arm, holding the ball in the direction you want to hit and lift the ball without bending very much at the elbow. As you lift, release the ball by opening the fingers. Toss the ball so it peaks higher than the tip of the racket. Toss the ball to the same spot consistently. Repeat the step on the left and right side of court. Work a couple of tag points here for tossing. Part 3. Bring the racket to a position behind your back and touch the middle of your back with the edge of your racket. Lift the racket head a few inches and make this the starting point. Repeat the step on the left and right side of court. Work a couple of tag points here for racket position and for throwing a ball across court with the racket hand. Part 4. Swing up at the ball. The serve motion goes up before it goes forward. Don't let the elbow lead the stroke; keep the elbow high until after the hit. Repeat the step on the left and right side of the service line. Work a couple of tag points here for the swing. |
| 07/12/10 |
| Tennis/ continued |
|
| Part 5. When you hit, reach as high as you can. Your arm and racket should be fully extended when contact is made.
Repeat the step on the left and right side of court. Work a couple of tag points here for the reach. Part 6. With the hit, snap the wrist. Repeat the step on the left and right side of court. Work a couple of tag points here for the snap. Part 7. After contact, bring the racket forward toward the net as far as it will go. Repeat the step on the left and right side of court. Work a couple of tag points Part 8. Follow though across your body, ending on the opposite side from which the motion began. Repeat the step on the left and right side of court. Work a couple of tag points Part 9. Practice directing serves deep and to specific spots marked on the court. Repeat the step on the left and right side of court. |
| 07/12/10 |
| Tennis/ continued |
|
| Part 10. Move back to a position halfway between the service line and the baseline and build the serve again.
Repeat the step on the left and right side of court. Part 11. Mover back to the baseline and build the serve again. Repeat the step on the left and right side of the service line. Part 12. Move back to the 2 feet behind baseline and build the serve again. Repeat the step on the left and right side of court. Part 13. Build a pre serve routine. Repeat the step on the left and right side of court. |
| 07/12/10 | 10 | Karate | We reviewed the 20 techniques and added 3 more that she knew well already. | Tag point: Check | We reviewed first and then worked on the new stuff. We worked for about an hour. The only thing I tag was keeping her hand up. |

Tag Point: Straight Elbow Tag Point: Arm Only I marked the tags 10 times each with a loud box clicker so that she could hear it over her playing. | The Kidlet got out her cello and asked that I tag her bow work.
I immediately stopped what I was doing and got my clicker. I praised her for getting her cello out and asking for tags. She LOVES to hear I am proud of her. At dinner I told everyone at the table how proud I am that the Kidlet will get her cello out and start playing with out anyone asking that she do so. |

She asked that the Kidlet practice each for 5 minutes everyday for this week using a long bow action on the G string. |

| I have been forgetting to pull a bead when I think about I filling in the daily log. Having it done is a reward in it self for me. |
Could this be about TAG Teach?
"I will act now. I will act now. I will act now. Henceforth, I will repeat these words each hour, each day, everyday, until the words become as much a habit as my breathing, and the action which follows becomes as instinctive as the blinking of my eyelids.
With these words I can condition my mind to perform every action necessary for my success. I will act now. I will repeat these words again and again and again. I will walk where failures fear to walk. I will work when failures seek to rest. I will act now for now is all I have.
Tomorrow is the day reserved for the labor of the lazy. I am not lazy. Tomorrow is the day when the failure will succeed. I am not a failure. I will act now.
Success will not wait. If I delay, success will become wed to another and lost to me forever. This is the time. This is the place.
I am the person."

| 07/09/10 | 3 | Basketball | The Kidlet's basketball coach challenged her to eat one meal a day with her non dominate hand. | Tag Point: Spoon to Mouth
I marked with a I-click clicker. I marked the spoon to mouth about 10 times. I missed several and was reminded. | She was eating cereal. |
| 07/09/10 |
| Project Assessment | The Kidlet is learning to eat without slurping. | The Kidlet started making a list and came up with:
Cut food into small pieces Close lips while chewing Swallow then speak Dump spoon in mouth (instead of sucking the food off the spoon or fork.) | The Kidlet and I talked about what tag points can we use instead of eating with a quiet mouth.
We looked at the little things that makes quiet eating happen. |
| 07/09/10 | 15 | Karate | We reviewed the 13 techniques and added 3 more. | Tag point: Check | We added 3 new techniques today.
We reviewed and worked on the new stuff for about an hour. The only thing I tagged in any was keeping her non blocking or hitting hand up in a check. The Kidlet also made a "flash card" for each technique. She put the technique number to correspond to the DVD and the technique name on one side. She put what the technique is a defense against on the other. She can study the cards and learn the defenses. She can also sort the cards in to piles of similar movements, similar attacks or what ever to compare and contrast them. She can also shuffle the cards and then preform the techniques. |
| 07/09/10 |
| Tennis | The Kidlet is learning to play tennis and has a 45 minute group lesson 4 times a week for six weeks. This is the end of week # 4. |
| I watched the Kidlet's instructor try to teach a group of 9, 8 year old beginning tennis players how to serve.
She simply showed them how she does it and asked that the kids to copy her. She gave them each three tries and then moved on. This teaching method worked for 3 of the 8 children. It did not work for the Kidlet . She was seriously frustrated. I need to break the serve into small bites and tag her on each part. |
| 07/09/10 |
| Project Assessment | I sat in on the Kidlet's Cello lesson. |
| At her Cello lesson yesterday, The Kidlet's teacher showed her how to over bend her wrist on the up stroke and straighten her elbow to cause a relaxed should on the up stroke.
When the bow gets near the tip, the elbow should straighten. She asked that The Kidlet practice each for 5 minutes everyday for this week using a long bow action on the G string while keeping her body still. Only the arm should move. The Kidlet needs to be tagged on hold the cello upright. The C peg should be just behind her ear. Feet should be flat on the floor. Seat / Feet is the cue that the teacher used. The torso should be slightly leaned forward toward Cello. Hug the cello is the cue that the teacher used. |

| 07/08/10 | 3 | Karate | We reviewed the new technique that Tayja leaned in class last night.
The kid was tired and grumpy. We did not work very long. | Captured Twigs goes from a horse stance to a twisting close cat stance.
Tag point: Twirling Cat | We worked on 3 different techniques today. One was new.
Each day we will add one or two. I like start Karate with the newest while the Kidlet is fresh. First I had the Kidlet write the techniques in her notebook and write what it is self defense against. We skipped watching a video clip of an expert preform the new technique because the teacher went over it in class last night. Then the Kidlet read out loud how to preform the technique. Then I read out loud to the Kidlet how to preform the techniques while she slowly went though the steps. Lastly she preformed it a couple of times with me or her saying the steps before adding any tag points. For the one of new, I tagged the cat stance in the middle of the technique. We worked for about 15 minutes and quit before we did all of the review techniques because The Kidlet was seriously grumpy. She did not get enough sleep last night. She was NOT happy that we stopped early so I gave her a choice, do one more technique (there was no way either of us would have survived doing all the were left to review), read a book or play in her room for 10 minutes. She picked playing. |
| 07/08/10 |
| Project Assessment | The Kidlet is tired and grumpy today.
She was rude, distracted and mean at her tennis class this morning. | I have filled my pockets with small prizes and tokens.
I will mark the good stuff with a smile, an acknowledgment and maybe a prize or a token | The only “tagging” that I will be doing the rest of the day will be to mark the behaviors I'd like to see – politeness, smiles, consideration, self-starting, etc. |
| 07/08/10 | 12 | Citizenship | I was working to end the day on a good note. | I marked about 35 occurrences of good behavior, smiling, politeness, removing her plate from the table, etc that happen during a six hour period. | The Kidlet told me that her very bad day got much better as it went on.
She said that she was feeling tired and grumpy in the morning but ended up having a great day. From my point of view, the more she was tagged, the less grumpy she became. |

| 07/07/10 | 0.5 | Citizenship | We use tags (without stating the tag points) for the Kidlet's daily living. | Tag Point: Ready to Go!
Today I did not give a tag point. I marked with the word. "NICE!" And sent her to get a token. I need to carry tokens in my pockets. | The Kidlet is required to brush her teeth, fill the bathroom water bowls, shower, and get dressed down to her shoes as soon as she gets out of bed in the morning.
This morning she got up and did the routine without being reminded. This morning chain has been built slow over 4 years with a lot of positive reinforcement. Every once in a while, I reward random parts of the chain. |
| 07/07/10 | 10 | Karate | The Kidlet was surprised at how quickly she could remember old self-defense techniques. | Intellectual Departure is a tricky technique as it has a right back kick followed by a right shuffle side kick.
Remembering witch kick came first was frustrating for her. My instructions were to point the hiney then the hip at the target. My refrain became Hiney, Hip, Hiney, Hip. The Kidlet asked that it be the tag point. (The word Hiney makes her giggle.) I used a clicker to mark if she pointed her butt at the target as the second move of the technique. Tag point: Hiney, Hip Alternating Maces has three stance changes and three arm movements. Each hand movement is attached to a shift instance. Tag point: Shift | We worked on 12 different techniques today. Two were new. Each day we will add one or two.
First I had the Kidlet write the techniques in her notebook and write what it is self defense against. Then we watched a video clip of an expert preform the new techniques while talking through the steps. Then the Kidlet read out loud how to preform the technique. Then I read out loud to the Kidlet how to preform the techniques while she slowly went though the steps. Lastly she preformed it a couple of times with me or her saying the steps before adding any tag points. I did not use any tag points for the ones that she worked on yesterday. For the one of new ones I only tagged the completion of the technique. She was to preform each one 10 times in a row. I did not care is the did them well. I just wanted her to do the basic movements. The second technique has a back kick followed by a side kick with the same leg. That one I tagged the order about five times. We worked for about 40 minutes. |
| 07/07/10 | 10 | Softball | The Kidlet was very frustrated with my first tag point.
She did not want to take a break even though I could not figure out what she needed to do differently to get the ball to the target. I had to take away the ball to get her to stop and regroup. I will have her do the entire motion in the mirror before bed tonight. | Tag Point: Hit Target
Tag Point: Release at Hip | The Kidlet pitched into a hanging dog agility tire using the full windmill motion.
I started with the tag point hit target but it was not enough information. I needed to tell her where to release the ball to have enough control to hit the target. I changed the tag point to release ball at hip. |
| 07/07/10 | 3 | Dog training/ Loose Leash Walking | The Kidlet is preparing to run a friends English Cocker in agility in about 12 weeks. | Tag point: Hands to belly button
Tag point: Right neutral I used "Yes!" to mark each tag point. | Using a human as the dog, the Kidlet worked to keep Ringo from pulling her without pulling back, and on stopping her feet in a staggered position to prevent the dog from pulling her over.
The information I gave the Kidlet for not pulling back was to bring both hands holding the lead to her belly button and stop her feet. When we added the dog to the picture, she did a better job not being pulled around. |
| 07/07/10 | 3 | Citizenship | The Kidlet is learning to eat without slurping. | Tag Point: Quiet Mouth
I marked with the word "Click!" I marked the lack of a sucking noise about ten times. I missed several and was reminded. | The Kidlet asked that I click her for sucking in her noodles without slurping.
Then she harassed me for missing when her mouth was quiet. I would have preferred working on eating spaghetti without sucking the noodles in to her mouth. The Kidlet picked the tag point quiet mouth. Theresa asked that I consider these points for the next eating lesson: "What would the tag points be instead of "don't suck noodles into your mouth"? Also can you or the kid come up with distinct "do" tag points for quiet mouth. What are you doing to keep quiet and still masticate and swallow food. Maybe the kid can write a little book on the tag points she creates…"The Grown up Girls Book of TAG Points for Making Parents Happy" we could publish it as a downloadable book!" |
| 07/07/10 | 3 | Basketball | The Kidlet's basketball coach challenged her to eat one meal a day with her non dominate hand. | Tag Point: Fork to Mouth
I marked with the word "Click!" I marked the fork to mouth about 10 times. I missed several and was reminded. | The Kidlet requested that I continue to click her at dinner when I told her we were done with the Quiet Mouth tag.
So I suggested that she switch her fork to her left hand and try to maintain the quiet mouth, head over bowl and elbow off table that is required for polite eating. But I would only be marking the moment that the fork held in the left hand reached her mouth. |
| 07/07/10 | 0.5 | Cello | The Kidlet hates to start practicing her cello because she might miss something. | Tag Point: Cello Time | Once the Kidlet gets started playing her cello, she doesn't want to stop. She sometimes play for 2 hours.
She does not, however, often pick up the cello without being reminded. The goal is for her to play for at least 30 minutes every day. We want her to play when she has "down time." There isn't a scheduled time. Tag Point: Cello Time We marked when she gets out the cello with a verbal and give her a token. If she is "caught" playing the cello with out being asked she gets a jackpot. Theresa's comments: "An additional thought is to make the TAG point something that surrounds the behavior but is not the end result. If you want her to play the cello maybe the directions are generally "before you play with the cello, the tag point is…ring bell twice". Again the tag point is slightly away from anything that may be poisoned but still is fun and may encourage or remind the student to do something without "caving" in to something someone else wanted them to do. (not the case with the kid as she seems to want to practice) |
| 07/07/10 |
| Self-Assessment |
|
| It takes me longer to “log” the sessions than it does to complete the sessions.
I don't know if I am to be counting the prep time and the non tag work in my time log or just the actual time spent with a tagger in my hand. I emailed Theresa and have added her suggesting and comments to my log. Theresa suggested: "You can reduce low interest session recordings. Just tally minutes and write NN (Nothing New Or Outstanding to record)" |

| 07/06/10 | 10 | Fastpitch Softball | The Kidlet is learning to the windmill for fastpitch softball. | Tag point: Statue of Liberty
Tag Point: Still shoulders Tag point: Statue of Liberty I used a clicker to mark the tags. | First we watched the first two drills on a Dvd called The Basics & fundamentals for the Windmill Pitcher.
The first drill explained the correct way to hold a softball. The second covered bringing the ball over your head with a straight arm while having your head straight up and down and your biceps close to your ear. The drill calls for zero movement of the torso. I did not tag the proper way to hold a ball as it is something that the Kidlet has already mastered. I did tag the second drill. I had to break the drill down in to smaller pieces. First I had her just slowly lift her arm straight up so that her hand was over her head with the ball in it. No tags needed. She did that about ten times. Then I asked for no bend in the elbow but that the elbow not be hyperextended. I showed her what I meant and then had her tag me about 10 times with a straight elbow. Then I added head straight up and down. When we put it all together Tayja named it Statue of Liberty. I clicked for the Statue of Liberty about ten times. Next we worked on the windmill arm movement. The Kidlet was using her upper body to fling her arm into motion. I clicked for still shoulders for about ten times until she got it. I explained that it she arched her back slightly ti would help keep the shoulders still. I showed her what I meant and then had her tag me about 10 times for keeping my shoulders still while I did the windmill motion. Next we added a pause in the Statue of Liberty position. I clicked at the peak if her elbow was correct. The entire session was about 50 minutes. |
| 07/06/10 | 1 | Citizenship | We use tags (without stating the tag points) for the Kidlet's daily living. | Tag Point: Throw away trash.
I marked with the word. "NICE!" And sent her to get a token. I need to carry tokens in my pockets. | The Kidlet is a hoarder.
Today I thanked her and gave her a token (poker chip) for throwing away bits of paper when she was picking up her stuff from the living room coffee table. This is major because she tries to save scraps of paper and candy wrappers in case she wants to “make” something out of it later. |

| 07/05/10 | 15 | Karate | The Kidlet has to know 25 self-defense techniques by July 24 for her next belt. | We started with the techniques that she knows so that we can clean them up.
She is not doing the four steps to the kicks. The steps are up, out, in down. She forgets to keep her hands up to protect her face. That is called a check. We are went though as many as she could remember ten times each and for the first five times I marked a tag point. The last five were at full speed with me attacking her, for her to start getting them in to muscle memory without me marking a tag point. Today's tag points are: Tag Point: Check Tag Point: up Tag Point: out Tag Point: in Tag Pont: down I marked with the word. "YES!" | We worked on 11 different techniques today. They are all things that she knew pretty well from class.
She asked if I'd tag her today. We ended up with about 15 minutes of tagging in a 90 minute work session. First I had Tayja write the techniques in her notebook and write what it is self defense against. Then we watched a video clip of an expert preform the technique while talking through the steps. Then the Kidlet read out loud how to preform the technique. Then I read out loud to the Kidlet how to preform the techniques while she slowly went though the steps. Lastly she preformed it a couple of times before adding any tag points. About two hours later, while riding in the car, I told the Kidlet the name of each techniques and she told me what it is a defense against. Next she quizzed me on the attacks. Next I told her the attacks and she answered with a technique. This review took about 5 minutes. |

TAGging Children
TAGging
First you pick a tag point.
You say, "Tag point lips closed while chewing."
You don't say, "Don't chew with your mouth open." or "Are you talking with food in your mouth?"
When the lips close you click, or say good or yes or nice.
Other than that, you ignore the open mouth with the food hanging out.
SHAPING
You don't tell the kid what you are tagging. You wait for it.
My Kidlet, when age 6, was slow to get out of bed in the morning. I've shaped her to put her feet on the floor as soon as I wake her up.
First I used a stop watch for a week to see how long it was taking her to get out of bed after my first request. I never gave a second one because I thought that she was just waiting for my second one. Some times she got up before I asked -if she had before school care and was in a hurry to go and play with her friends. The longest it took was six minutes.
For a week, I jack-potted her with three tokens if she got up without me asking and I gave her one token if it took her less that four minutes after my request. She got nothing if it took her more than four minutes.
For the next week, I jack-potted her with three tokens if she was up without my asking or if she put her feet on the floor as soon as I asked her to get up. I gave her one if she was out of bed in less than one minute.
For the next week, I gave her one token if she was up without my asking or if she put her feet on the floor as soon as I asked her to get up. She was not rewarded for anything else.
Now I randomly reward with tokens or candy when she gets right up or gets up before I ask.
RANDOM REWARDS
Everyday I find at least three things to reward her for as does my spouse. Sometimes the kid gets tokens. Sometimes she gets quarters which are to her a higher reward as she uses them to buy fancy pencils out of the machine at school. Sometimes she gets candy or a doughnut - a rare treat at our house.
She uses her tokens to buy goodies off of the prize table in our basement. I buy things that I know she will like (and want to earn) as I see them on sell. She can use use her tokens to go to the zoo, open swim, a movie, or open gym at the gymnastic school or to take a buddy to Chuckie Cheese.
I find that now I reward much more that I punish.
Tag points don't include the words "You" or "I."
Correct: "Tag point is 'Lips closed while chewing'."
Incorrect: "Tag point is 'close your lips when you chew'."
A tag point includes only one instruction:
Correct: "Lips closed while chewing."
Incorrect: "Lips closed and elbows off table while chewing."
A tag point should ideally be five words or fewer (which will help prevent multiple tag points in a single tag).
Correct: "Lips closed while chewing."
Incorrect: "Lips are closed when eating at the table."
